Yost’s ECOT Audit Release Further Reveals Mishandling of Investigation
CLEVELAND — In response to Dave Yost’s press conference this morning, Steve Dettelbach released the following statement:
“The truth is worse than we feared. It’s clear that Bill Lager, wherever he is, owes Dave Yost a deep debt of gratitude. Yost is now confirming career staff at the auditor’s office were aware of ECOT’s fraud even before a witness came forward, and Yost didn’t make a referral, didn’t move to collect evidence and didn’t stop taxpayer money from flowing to ECOT for a year or more. Yost has betrayed taxpayers and students alike and jeopardized the criminal case against Bill Lager and ECOT.”
“Dave Yost’s excuses for why he couldn’t refer the case are a flat out joke. As a federal prosecutor for 20 years, I know fraud cases don’t get better with age.”
“As leaders across Ohio have been saying for years, Yost needs to recuse himself from this matter immediately. For years, he enabled ECOT’s scam by giving it awards and cashing its checks. Now he has already done irreparable harm by playing politics with this case. The $30,000 Lager and others gave to Yost was the best money ECOT ever spent.”
Steve Dettelbach, the Democratic candidate for Ohio Attorney General, is a former United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio and career federal prosecutor.
